This two-day course is designed for individuals interested in personal defence and is based on the original instinctive shooting syllabus taught to members of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and Special Operations Executive (SOE) from 1940-1946. Whilst not as intensive as our one-day class, it is still challenging as it includes several scenario shoots, which are authentic to the original programme.

The overarching focus is on fast, extreme close-quarter shooting (1-7 yards) without the use of sights, from any position and in any light.

Skills Taught

Whilst students need no shooting experience to attend this course, they should be reasonably familiar with their weapons and operation.

This course includes 6 application scenario shoots, which are either authentic and taken directly from, or closely based on, the original OSS/SOE course syllabus.

Equipment Required

• Any reasonably concealable handgun that you would carry for personal defence. (Note: If you have a .22lr version of your carry gun it is a good idea to bring it along)
• 600 rounds of ammunition (all centrefire) or 600 rounds of centrefire and rimfire (if you bring a .22lr trainer)
• Holster, Belt, Minimum of 2 spare magazines or Speedloaders / strips carried in pouch or pocket
• Eye and ear protection
• Seasonal coat to conceal handgun

In addition to using their own handgun and ammunition on the course, students will have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with different weapons in the instructors’ armoury and hand-crafted, mission-specific concealment holsters at no additional cost, during the “draw and fire” periods of instruction.

Working lunches are included in the course fee and students are invited to a complimentary end-of-course barbecue.

• Safety. Loading/Unloading. Range Commands to be used. Reloading.
• Basic malfunction drills. Fundamentals of Instinctive Shooting.
• Practices I and II – Instinctive “single and double taps”. Shooting and Moving.
• Scenario application - confirmation of principles learned. Practice III- traversing. Quick Aimed Fire and use of cover/concealment. Positional Shooting.
• Shooting Up/Down (at targets higher or lower than yourself).

Scenario applications:

1. The original SOE/OSS “Attack in the Open”.
2. Confirmation of lessons learned in the shooting house

Low Light Shooting.

Day 2

Revision of Day 1. Extreme Close Quarters- “Three Quarter”, “Half” and “Quarter Hip” Practices IV, V and VI (1 yard – 5 yards). From the draw, open and concealed carry. Multiple targets. In good, poor or no light. Weapons and holsters used for “deep concealment” vs. belt carry.

Scenario applications:

1. The original SOE/OSS “Check Point/Hold Up” scheme.
2. “Force on Force” scenario.
3. End of Course shoot, based on the original “Rescue” scheme.

Background

The student will become proficient in techniques refined by the British Intelligence training establishment during WWII. From 1942, Col. Rex Applegate of the OSS included the same syllabus in the OSS agent courses at Area B and the Military Intelligence Training Centre (MITC). The methods taught equipped the solo, undercover agent to take dynamic and aggressive action either prior to, or immediately following, capture in enemy-occupied territory. Such scenarios always started with the agent in a disadvantaged position, usually against multiple opponents with the weapon concealed from view.

As such, the practical dynamism of the syllabus is as valid today in personal defence situations as it was then. Various Intelligence agencies and Special Operations Units still teach this system. The emphasis on fast, one-handed shooting without the use of sights in any light condition, coupled with quick aimed fire when cover, time and distance allow, have been found to be an excellent base from which any “serious shooter” can develop.

Instructors

Ian M. is related to one of the first SOE instructors of the instinctive shooting syllabus. He was coached by his relative from his early teens. He served for 7 years with a unit of British Military Intelligence, specialising in counter-intelligence and teaching the instinctive shooting syllabus to select personnel as a member of a Specialist Training Team. Attendance of numerous official and commercial courses, together with 15 years of experience in the Protective Security industry, have given him a broad knowledge base.

John C. is a former British Army weapons instructor who has been involved in counter terrorism security for the past 36 years. As an aviation security training expert, he provides UK government training programmes for operators, supervisors and managers. His main interests include the recognition, detection and concealment of firearms, weapons and explosives.

Neville S. was a Scotland Yard detective for 25 years, with experience of homicide and serious criminal felony investigations. A trained police “marksman”, he served on the world-famous Anti-Terrorist Branch at Scotland Yard. These terrorist offensives ranged from the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), Abu Nidal Organisation (ANO) and the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA) to fringe groups such as the Animal Rights Militia.

One Day Handgun Proficiency Course: $100 per Student

This course is an NRA certified course taught by Range 37 Instructors. This introductory course focuses on the fundamentals of shooting safety, weapons handling and marksmanship. This introductory course focuses on the fundamentals of shooting safety, weapons handling and marksmanship with a shotgun. If you are thinking about purchasing or just purchased a shotgun and need training this is the perfect class for you. The student will quickly gain experience, confidence and increase his skill level with a shotgun and ends with a final man vs. man steel target shooting event. All students will complete an evaluation to let them know what improvements are made. This is not a hunting shotgun course, but focuses more on tactical/home defense uses of the shotgun, designed around a pump or auto feeding shot.

This 2-day or 3-day seminar covers the big five classes for High threat Awareness training, preparing individuals for travel to high threat countries.

Subjects covered are The History of Terrorism, Terrorist Operations, Hostage Survival, and Detecting Terrorists Surveillance, Individual Protective Measures and Route analysis and planning. Small group exercises are conducted for the route analysis and planning portion of the seminar. Other subjects covered are information searches, Personal Information on the internet and personal computer network security techniques.
